 2008-09 Championship Highlights

continue

Arleta 31  Franklin 8

Jeff Eingleman and the Arleta Mustangs are now able to enjoy an undefeated season as they were victorious in the championship game and posted a 14-0 record.

In a game that started with Franklin looking strong and Arleta playing in an unfamiliar fashion, running sweeps and reverses. The Mustangs would score first on a field goal but Franklin would counter with a touchdown and a two point conversion. 3-8

Then it happened, Arleta started the second quarter in their spread offense and started doing the things that got them to the finals. They would score twice and lead 15-8 at the half.

The third quarter would belong to Bryan Choto and Albert Sandobal with Sandobal making an acrobatic catch to set up a touchdown by Omar Sanchez. Choto would score the last TD on a quarterback keeper, Franklin would take a late safety and the rest was history.

Franklin played their hearts out, but could not match the intensity of the Mustangs. On this night, Arleta could do no wrong.......

NARBONNE 21   SAN PEDRO 21

In the strangest ending to a Championship game ever, there was no winner in the City Section Championship Division game last Saturday. In the end, the game would be decided by a City Section rule that states, "there will be no overtime in a championship game".

This game would start with the feeling of bad air between the two teams, stemming from the triple overtime conference match up earlier this season ending in victory for Narbonne.

At the half with the score 6-0  it would be advantage Narbonne, appearing that this game may end identical to the first meeting of the two teams.  In the third quarter both teams would  score  going into the fourth, advantage  Narbonne 15 -6

With 9 minutes left in the fourth Corey Hughes would intercept a Josh Moten pass setting up a Benny Weischedel 20 yard touchdown catch. Later in the game Narbonne would turn the ball over on downs and San Pedro would have one last chance to show the crowd a championship drive.

The crowd would witness an NFL style  drive spearheaded by the 2 minute offense of the San Pedro quarterback Barry Heads.   Literally in his final second as a High School Quarterback, Heads was able to do what every senior quarterback dreams of doing. Throw a touchdown pass to his favorite senior receiver Benny Weischedel to (win the game) secure a championship.

San Pedro coach Mike Walsh who was aware of the overtime  rule,  made a decision to go for the tie and the co champion honors saying ,"I couldn't take away the chance for them to win a championship".

Coach of the Week

All the Coaches

For successfully making a winner out of all the athletes in the city. When we say winner we mean winning at a higher level than 10-0 or 0-10. Winning is the process that keeps a kid from going astray from April in the spring, to passing league, to Hell week on through the season. This is a task that it takes a very special person to accomplish. Those of us who coach, know, there is much more to coaching than just wins and losses.

HOW LONG WILL WE ALLOW THE SELECTION COMMITTEE TO SCORN OUR CHILDREN ON WHAT WAS A VALID TECHNICALITY? BY NOT HAVING A POST SEASON PLAYOFF BRACKETING SYSTEM THAT ENDS AT THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP, SIMILAR TO TEXAS AND LOUISIANA.  HOW CAN WE CALL THIS A CHAMPIONSHIP, THIS SHOULD BE CALLED THE HIGH SCHOOL BCS SYSTEM. IS A CHAMPIONSHIP REALLY A CHAMPIONSHIP WHEN IT'S PICKED AND NOT PLAYED FOR. I GUESS WE WILL FIND OUT ONE DAY.
